What it is

Fisetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in strawberries, apples, and persimmons. It is the most potent senolytic compound identified to date — meaning it selectively kills senescent ('zombie') cells that accumulate with age and drive inflammation and tissue dysfunction.

How it works

Fisetin activates multiple pathways: it induces apoptosis in senescent cells via p53 and caspase signaling, inhibits mTORC1, reduces SASP (senescence-associated secretory phenotype) inflammatory cytokines, and acts as a direct antioxidant. In mice, it extended median lifespan by ~10% and improved tissue function across multiple organs.

Who should take it

Adults over 40 seeking longevity support, individuals with chronic inflammation, those recovering from chemotherapy, or anyone interested in cellular rejuvenation. Particularly relevant for Indians given high rates of metabolic inflammation.

Avoid / careful

Pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, people with bleeding disorders (mild antiplatelet effect), those on chemotherapy without oncologist approval. Side effects: Very safe at standard doses. Rarely: mild stomach upset, headache, or diarrhea at high doses.

FAQs

Frequently asked

How long before I see results?
Senolytic effects are cellular and not immediately perceptible. Inflammation markers may shift within 4–8 weeks. Physical function improvements (if any) typically require 3–6 months of pulse dosing.
Is it safe to take daily?
Fisetin is safe for daily use at 100 mg, but pulse dosing (3 days on, 2 weeks off) is preferred for senolytic effect. This mimics the clinical trial protocol and allows the body to clear debris between cycles.
Can I take it with blood thinners?
Caution advised. Fisetin has mild antiplatelet activity. Consult your doctor if on warfarin, aspirin, or other anticoagulants.

Editorial notes

SacredBod's longer take on Fisetin — context the structured blocks above don't capture.

Fisetin is the most exciting compound in longevity research right now. Discovered as the most potent natural senolytic — a compound that selectively kills ‘zombie’ senescent cells — it has moved from mouse studies to human clinical trials in under a decade.

What the Research Shows

The landmark 2018 study by Yousefzadeh et al. (PMID 30996203) found that fisetin was the most effective of 10 flavonoids tested at clearing senescent cells. In aged mice, oral fisetin extended median lifespan by approximately 10%, improved tissue function in kidney, liver, and fat, and reduced age-related pathology. No toxicity was observed even at high doses.

The TROFFi Phase 2 RCT (PMID 41835341, NCT05595499) is currently evaluating fisetin (20 mg/kg, days 1–3 of a 14-day cycle for 4 cycles) in 88 postmenopausal breast cancer survivors with diminished physical function. The primary endpoint is 6-minute walk distance — a functional measure of frailty. Multiple other trials are recruiting for sepsis, peripheral artery disease, and glioma.

India Context

  • Availability: Decode Age, DeAge, and Vedik Ayurveda offer fisetin capsules on Amazon India. Most products are 100 mg/capsule.
  • Price: ₹600–₹1,500 for 30 capsules depending on brand and formulation.
  • Dietary source: Indians consume fisetin through strawberries (seasonal), apples, and persimmons — but dietary amounts are far below therapeutic doses (~1–5 mg/day from food vs. 100 mg supplemental).
  • Regulatory: Not a Schedule H drug. Sold as dietary supplement.

Dosage & Safety

  • Standard dose: 100 mg/day, pulse dosing (3 days on, 2 weeks off)
  • Clinical trial dose: 20 mg/kg (≈1.4 g for 70 kg adult) — much higher, under medical supervision only
  • Best time: Morning with food
  • Caution: Mild antiplatelet effect. Use caution with blood thinners.
