What it is

Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes extracted from pineapple stems (not the fruit). It is measured in gelatin-digesting units (GDU) or milk-clotting units (MCU). Supplement potencies vary widely—standardized products typically provide 2,000–2,400 GDU/g. Bromelain has been studied for acute post-surgical edema, acute sinusitis, and osteoarthritis, but evidence for chronic digestive or weight-loss claims is weak.

How it works

As a protease, bromelain breaks down proteins in vitro, but in vivo its systemic effects appear to come from modulation of inflammatory mediators (reducing bradykinin, prostaglandin E2, and fibrinogen) rather than direct digestion. In acute sinusitis, bromelain may reduce mucosal swelling by altering fibrin deposition. In knee OA, small trials suggest modest pain reduction comparable to low-dose NSAIDs, but trial quality is limited.

Who should take it

Adults recovering from dental or soft-tissue surgery (short-term), people with acute sinusitis seeking adjunctive support, and those with knee OA who cannot tolerate NSAIDs. Not a primary treatment for any of these conditions.

Avoid / careful

Avoid if you have a pineapple allergy, take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs (theoretical bleeding risk), or have a bleeding disorder. Do not use before surgery without surgeon approval. Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety is insufficiently studied.

FAQs

Frequently asked

How long until Bromelain starts working?
Most supplements show effects in 2-8 weeks of consistent daily use. Notable effects from Bromelain typically appear within this window, though individual response varies based on baseline status, dose, and underlying biochemistry.
When should I take Bromelain?
Bromelain works best taken morning or evening, ideally with or without food. Typical dose: 500–1,000 GDU per day in divided doses. Consistency over time matters more than perfect timing.
Is Bromelain safe to take long-term?
For most adults, yes — with the cautions noted: Avoid if you have a pineapple allergy, take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs (theoretical bleeding risk), or have a bleeding disorder. Do not use before surgery without surgeon approval. Pregnancy. Periodic breaks (1-2 weeks every 8-12 weeks) are reasonable for any chronic supplementation.
Is Bromelain vegan and vegetarian-friendly?
Yes — Bromelain is vegan and vegetarian-suitable. Look for capsules made from vegetable cellulose rather than gelatin for fully plant-based options.
Is Bromelain available in India and what should I look for when buying?
Bromelain is widely available on Amazon India and in supplement stores in major cities. Look for products standardised to active compounds where applicable — 500–1,000 GDU per day is a typical serving. Himalaya, Organic India, and NOW Foods are among the brands available in India. Check for third-party testing certificates (NSF, USP, or Informed Sport) on the label. Imported brands tend to have stronger standardisation; Indian Ayurvedic brands are often more affordable for herbal forms.
Can I take Bromelain if I'm on blood thinners?
Bromelain may interact with anticoagulants such as warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel by enhancing their blood-thinning effect. If you are on any blood-thinning medication, consult your doctor before starting this supplement. Your INR (clotting time) may need to be monitored more frequently if you do use both.

Honest framing

Bromelain’s anti-inflammatory effect is real but modest. The strongest evidence is for acute post-surgical edema and acute sinusitis (specific formulations used in clinical settings). Knee OA evidence exists but comes from small, older trials. Digestive and weight-loss marketing claims lack RCT support—bromelain is not a fat burner, and its protein-digesting activity is largely irrelevant in the gut where it is either denatured or absorbed intact. If you buy bromelain, choose a potency-standardized product (GDU labeled) and be aware that 75% of Amazon-sold bromelain products failed potency testing in a 2023 industry analysis.

What to expect

  • Sinusitis: Possible faster resolution of facial pressure and congestion when combined with standard care.
  • Post-surgical swelling: Reduced edema and bruising in dental/soft-tissue surgery at 1,000+ GDU/day.
  • Knee OA: Small pain reduction comparable to low-dose NSAIDs; do not expect structural cartilage improvement.

Interactions & cautions

  • Anticoagulants: Bromelain has fibrinolytic activity; increased bleeding risk with warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel.
  • Surgery: Discontinue 2 weeks before elective surgery unless your surgeon approves.
  • Potency fraud: Many products contain <10% of labeled GDU; buy from reputable brands with third-party testing.

How to take

Take 500–1,000 GDU on an empty stomach twice daily. For acute sinusitis, use for 7–10 days. For post-surgical support, use for 1–2 weeks. Do not use indefinitely without a clear indication.
