SacredBod's longer take on Astragalus (Respiratory) — context the structured blocks above don't capture.
Astragalus membranaceus is a foundational TCM Qi tonic used for immune resilience and respiratory health. Its active polysaccharides stimulate immune cell activity, and it has been traditionally used for chronic cough, weakness, and recurrent infections. The evidence base is strong in animal models but limited in human respiratory trials.
Astragalus polysaccharides interact with TLR4 receptors on macrophages and dendritic cells, stimulating cytokine production, natural killer cell activity, and T-cell proliferation. Saponins (astragalosides) may support mitochondrial function. For respiratory outcomes, the herb is thought to enhance mucosal immunity and reduce susceptibility to viral and bacterial infections.
Who benefits most
Adults with frequent respiratory infections or recovering from viral illness. Not a replacement for vaccines, antibiotics when indicated, or medical treatment of pneumonia or COPD.
Dosage and form
1000 mg is the typical effective range. Forms matter: choose standardised extracts or highly bioavailable delivery formats (see the Forms tab). Take as directed.
Side effects and cautions
Generally well-tolerated. Avoid if you: Avoid if you have autoimmune conditions (may stimulate immune activity). Use caution with immunosuppressant medications. No safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding..
The evidence
Human clinical trials and mechanistic research support the use of Astragalus (Respiratory) for its primary indication. See the Research tab for full citations and study summaries.
