SacredBod's longer take on Pomegranate Extract — context the structured blocks above don't capture.
Concentrated pomegranate fruit, peel, or seed extract standardized to punicalagins and ellagic acid. Different from pomegranate juice (more sugars, less concentrated polyphenols). Urolithin A (separate supplement) is a metabolite produced when gut bacteria process pomegranate ellagitannins.
Polyphenols inhibit LDL oxidation, support endothelial function via NO availability, and have anti-inflammatory effects. The POMx Aviram studies showed reduced carotid intima-media thickness, though replication has been mixed. Urolithin precursor — only ~40% of people have the gut bacteria to convert ellagitannins to urolithin A.
The evidence base (C+ grade) reflects this: BP reduction modest. Aviram CIMT studies positive but replication weak. PSA-doubling-time studies in prostate cancer interesting but small. For practical use, the typical dose range is 500-1000 mg standardized extract daily, ideally with a fat-containing meal for fat-soluble compounds.
Who benefits most: Adults with mild blood pressure elevation, oxidative-stress concerns, or prostate health monitoring (PSA-watch). Polyphenol-deficient diets.
Cautions: Concurrent ACE inhibitors without BP monitoring (potential additive hypotension). Pregnancy at high doses (limited safety data on concentrated extracts).
Pairing notes: Quercetin for combined polyphenols. CoQ10 for cardiovascular synergy.
